HISTORY

In 1983, The Mu Gamma Zeta chapter was chartered by seven illustrious women at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Homestead, Florida, sponsored by the Beta Tau Zeta Chapter. Our charter members are: Dorothy Adside*, Ada Barnes, Chandler Childs*, Viola Holmes, Altomease Mays*, Ernestine Seymore* and Laura Saunders*.

Laura C. Saunders’ commitment to the community and education led to an elementary school being named in her honor in Homestead, Florida in 1997. Because of this, Mu Gamma Zeta adopted Laura C. Saunders Elementary School.

Decades later, our chapter still holds strong to the original principles of our charter members. We are dedicated and hardworking members of Zeta, committed to bettering our local communities. We display this commitment through programming such as ZHOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel through Mind, Body and Spirit), our Stork’s Nests and our partnerships with the March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society.

In addition to our community service initiatives, we also serve as the Graduate Advisors of the Sigma Delta Chapter at University of Miami.
